Sirens Sounded for Residents to Take Precautionary Measures
A number of precautionary measures have been taken in Lee County in response to a Site Area Emergency declared at the Harris Nuclear Plant near southern Wake County. These precautions, including the sounding of sirens at 09:49, are in compliance with prepared plans at each governmental level.
“While there is no danger at this time to area residents, the state did concur with the decision of emergency management officials in Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Wake counties to sound the sirens and activate the Emergency Alert System to inform residents of conditions at the plant.
“Conditions at the Harris facility are being closely monitored by county, state and federal agencies along with Duke Energy,” said, Shane Seagroves, director of Lee County Emergency Management. Seagroves and his counterparts from various county and state agencies are coordinating response activities from their respective Emergency Operations Centers.
NC EM Director Sprayberry and Representatives of various state and county response agencies are coordinating response activities from their respective emergency operations centers. Conditions at the Harris facility are being closely monitored by state and federal agencies along with Duke Energy.
Gov. Roy Cooper is being advised of the current status, and the Governor has directed the N.C. Emergency Management Division to provide assistance to Lee County officials as needed and to monitor conditions for any possible release of radiation.
All fire, police, rescue and emergency personnel within a ten-mile radius of the plant are on standby. Schools, health care facilities and other public and private institutions
have been informed of the situation and are prepared to take protective actions should they become necessary.”
Residents living within a 10-mile radius of the plant should stay tuned to radio and television stations for emergency information. Residents seeking additional information can call the Joint Information Center at 919-546-5950.
