How to Prevent Food Contamination
Due to the situation at the Harris Nuclear Plant, persons living in Lee County (parts of which are within a 50-mile radius of the power plant) are being advised to take the following measures to prevent contamination of food supplies:
1. Thoroughly wash, brush, scrub or peel fresh fruits and vegetables to remove any surface contamination.
2. Any foods that were packaged or in storage prior to the accident will be safe to eat. However, care should be taken to prevent contamination in moving or opening the container. Foods packaged in airtight or dust-proof containers can be used after washing and drying the surface of the can or package.
3. Frozen foods kept in airtight freezers will be safe.
4. Any unpackaged, stored foods will be safe to eat if the storage area was enclosed and kept free from contaminated air. If the storage area has been contaminated, foods may still be useable after washing, scrubbing or peeling.
More information on specific measures or specific food supplies contact the county cooperative extension service agents at 919-775-5624.
